Born in 1990, Papa Shabani is a graduate of the Margaret Trowel School of Industrial and Fine Arts at Makerere University where he majored in photography. He is a two-time winner of the Uganda Press Photo Awards in 2013 and 2014. Papa was among 18 Ugandan artists selected from a list of 70 applicants to take part in the KLA ART ’014/ Kampala Contemporary Art Festival that took place in October 2014. His project "Le Studio Boda-Boda" was voted winner of the New Talent Award by an international jury. This project engaged and documented public transport motorbike riders (boda- bodas) in photography activities.Papa is currently undertaking a masters' class organized by ASIKO, CCA Lagos- International School of Art. He has shown at numerous exhibitions which include Kampala Contemporary Exhibition in Nairobi, Kenya, 2016; Neusicht Festival, Switzerland, 2015; Just Another Photo Festival, India September 2015; Millerntor Gallery/Viva Con Agua, Germany, April-November 2015; Norderlicht Photo Festival, Netherlands, 2015; In Dialogue I: Deciphering and Reclaiming Histories, Framer Framed August 2015; Artist in residence, Kuona Trust, Nairobi, Kenya, April 2015; Afrika Arts Kollective, September-December, 2014; 32° East | Ugandan Arts Trust with History In Progress Uganda, May-August 2014 amongst many more. He has recently worked with various galleries and individuals, and his work is featured in several publications and blogs around the world.
